  6. Why be a unionist in a university?

    Raewyn Connell (Professor Emerita, University of Sydney) was honoured with life membership of the Union at the 2014 NTEU National Council in recognition of her role as an active NTEU member and defender of quality, public higher education. 

    One of the many reasons Raewyn was honoured with life membership was her exceptional defence of higher education in her open letter and video to University of Sydney Vice Chancellor, Michael Spence, during NTEU industrial action in 2013. Click here to watch the video.

    After Council, we asked Raewyn to share why she felt it was important for higher education workers to unite and be active in the union.

    "The Union is now where the most creative and well-informed policy discussions about universities are happening. If Australian higher education is to change for the better, much of the thinking will come from the active membership of the NTEU."
